Why Full-Grain Vegetable-Tanned Leather Ages Differently

Unlike chromium-tanned synthetic leathers that peel after two seasons, vegetable tanning uses organic tree bark tannins to create hides that absorb natural oils and develop a rich patina over time.

In a world dominated by fast-fashion synthetic polyurethanes and chemical chromium tanning, full-grain vegetable-tanned leather stands as a quiet testament to patience.

Vegetable tanning is an ancient artisanal method that uses natural tannins extracted from mimosa, chestnut, and quebracho tree bark. The process takes anywhere from 30 to 60 days in wooden drums in our partner workshops in Kanpur and Chennai.

Unlike chrome-tanned leather, which seals the surface in a uniform plastic sheen, vegetable-tanned leather remains porous and responsive. As you handle your bag over months and years, the leather absorbs ambient oils, sunlight, and handling moisture, developing a rich amber patina unique to your life.

To care for your vegetable-tanned leather piece: wipe it gently with a dry cotton cloth once a week, avoid prolonged exposure to heavy downpours, and condition it once every quarter with a natural beeswax-based leather balm.
